I love learning new things so I jumped at the opportunity to tour Alcatraz federal penitentiary in San Francisco. I really didn't know much about the prison or the island.
First you take a ferry to the island which is in itself very cool because it gives you a chance to see San Francisco from a new perspective.
The island itself is really beautiful and it almost doesn't feel like you're in California anymore. I noticed a lot of cool plants and also some weird birds?? It looks like a tropical island in some parts, even though it was freezing.
It also has a very "shutter island" vibe and it was hard to imagine it actually being a working prison less than 70 years ago.
If you ever decide to your the island you have to do the audio tour. The commentary is done by former inmates and guards and their stories are chilling. Not to mention sound effects in the audio tour make it feel like you are living the experience.
Also, the Alcatraz gift shop is one of the best gift shops ever. I bought so many cool prints of San Francisco and cool prison trinkets.
